Darling Nikki

Nikki was my first child; born October 7, 1984, she was a Christmas gift from my college boyfriend...The first photo is of me at 19 and Nik, around 6 months, in Baton Rouge, LA; the summer before her death, my good friend, artist Brenda McCart, took photos of me and Nik in the same position and created a painting of us titled Darling Nikki...Nikki was the best baby, very sweet, gentle and always loving; she was my girl and slept on the pillow with me at night...We shared many adventures, traveling across country by car on a few occasions; she was the perfect traveling companion...She was relatively healthy until November 2003 when I started giving her sub q fluids daily...Her death, just like the photo and painting, occurred in my arms; we held eye contact and I felt her last breath leave her body, saw the life leave her eyes...This will always be one of the most precious moments of my life; I was so grateful and honored that she shared that moment of transition with me...Nik is the reason I have my 3 girls today; she brought such joy into my life and filled my heart with unconditional love that will never leave me...

Such a sweet story about your Darling Nikki; I can tell that you loved her with all your heart and soul. It is always sad to lose our loved ones, but they will always have a special place in our hearts. Nikki was beautiful and as you said, she taught you so much about love, and that was such a wonderful gift.

Oh Jacqueline...
What an incredible story and beautiful tribute! It's stories like this that show me the real beauty of the world we live in. What a blessing to have had that kitty in your life! The two of you looked so, so happy together!
...and that painting?!
Well, all I can say is... Awesome! It's not just the painting, but the memory that is preserved forever. I walk past Maxdog's painting throughout the day and his eyes remain with me - telling me about that moment when the original picture was taken....I know your feeling!
Thank you for sharing your Nikki (and yourself) with us all!
She was truly a special baby.
Sending lotsaluv and ((hugs))

A tribute so beautiful it made mom cry. Mom's siamese Henry died in her arms (when he was aged 19 and a half years old) ~ and she so understands how precious such moments are.

What a sweet story! Nikki sure had a long life full of love. There is something special about the first cat. I, too, got my first one while I was in college, and like you, he traveled with me as I moved on, living the life of a 20-something, then 30-something. They do make the best companions.

Thank you for sharing your story. Oh, and it's nice to meet you - we're new at the CB!

I am so glad Nikki found you and together you were able to share almost twenty years together. Those memories and the special love that you had for your first baby will continue forever and is now part of your family as I am sure Halle, Calle, Sukki and your other cats have grown up hearing about the cat that opened your heart and made you such a caring and kind person.

Sening you love and licks (licks is the word in my word verification today!)

What a long and wonderful life you had together! Nikki and you are both beautiful!

This story reminds me of my BooBoo--she made it to almost 20 years, too--but as much as I loved her, I can't in all good conscience call her "sweet." She was a feisty girl, as likely to snap at you as to snuggle! Hmmm, I seem to have repeated the pattern with Spitty, LOL!

Thank you for sharing you stories and photos of Nikki. I can tell she was you soul girl just as my Jake was my soul boy. Your account of her passing in your arms was exactly as Jake's last breaths were with me. I actually felt his soul fly away and let him know it was okay. Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. I'm so happy you were able to share those precious last moments with her because it truly is something you'll remember until the day you are reunited. Nikki was a very lucky girl to be so loved.
